Entering an abandoned mine puts us inevitably on the alert. We dig with our eyes in the places others have dug before us. Every surface tells a tale, and the mine vibrates anew at the contact with us, ready to release the traces of what has been from every fragment, and reveal the works of the past. If we still call this a mine, it is because it is a mine of possible reconstructions, a place that protects these traces not in the form of calm documentation, but as something that insistently begs to be reactivated.
With The abandoned mines, Centrale Fies opens its heart to a project of Collection of Performing Art, an original reflection on the preservation of performance. How can performance – something that is by nature ephemeral – persist beyond documentation? How can an object continue to release a performative charge?
Starting symbolically with the work of Curt Steckel, both imposing and vulnerable, like the entrance to a mine, The abandoned mines draws our gaze towards the mother lode of performative production. It offers up a panorama of works that look at the same time at the history of their production and at the possible futures of their activation.
For this reason, an abandoned mine is never inactive. It still allows works of extraction: however these deal not with trying to extract an object from a performance, but rather extracting infinite possible performances from the object before our eyes.
