2009, Public Art Commission, ICEBERG 09 Section Public Art Winner.

A participatory project to put in common hands the process of bread making. Realized through a hands-on workshop in a public market, that asked participants to share, teach and remember techniques for bread making and its relationship to their everyday lives. The workshop was followed by a public baking, bread breaking, and a parting gift of Pasta Madre (natural yeast).

Fare il Pane a Bologna

In 1914 the Socialist politician Francesco Zanardi runs for mayor of Bologna under the slogan “bread and literacy”. After his electoral victory he builds a public oven, where citizens of the city bring their risen dough to have it baked. Re-elected in 1921 Zanardi is shortly after chased out of town by the fascists. The public bakery goes into disuse. Years later it is resurrected as the Modern Art Museum of Bologna, in the new post-industrial creative neighborhood of the city.

In 2009 Curandi Katz in collaboration with Chiara Landonio win the ICEBERG public art award.

In the shadow of the former public oven, the artists set up a stand in the market and invite passersby to share, teach and remember techniques for bread making. At the neighboring senior center the artists build in the courtyard a wood burning bread oven built from clay collected from the river running nearby. The bread making is followed by a procession to the clay oven, a public baking and bread breaking, and a parting gift of Pasta Madre (natural yeast).
