community and sincerity
some pictures from my open studio/one day exhibition at lugar a dudas. i showed three videos: la calle de patricia, guilty pleasures, and new natives. the three videos together dealt with ideas of sincerity of the artist. each represented a position taken by myself as artist, in them i am acting or speaking with a level of sincerity or honesty. however, they also, for me, ask questions whether there is, or can be, a separation between a position taken aesthetically and a position of the person taking the aesthetic position.
new natives connects with the posters and paintings, all of which are text drawn from the directory for intentional communities. on the other wall is a diagram about communities, after stephen willats. in this diagram i replaced the artist-audience-context paradigm with community-art community-lugar a dudas. it was open to be filled in by visiting people, however with the show lasting just one day, it didn’t get too much attention… further down is a similar question diagram that i asked at the nashira community, one asking “what is a community” the other “what is nashira”
in honor of my new natives poster, which really seemed to succeed in confusing the artist from the work (in the sincerity question i asked above), i provided all raw vegan snacks, veggies and fresh juice.
the questions on community are really just the beginning for me. it is a theme that started to develop in the last month of my residency and is still in the experimenting, researching phase, but it was good to put it all out there and see how i functions, in the street, in the art space, in community. actually, it was good to try out some work in an exhibition context after working for the past five months out of this traditional context. there are more pictures on the lugar a dudas site.
